How Much CBD Is Right For Me?

Whether you're an experienced user or curious about trying CBD for the first time, understanding how much to take can be confusing. The amount of CBD is an important factor of the direct benefit one has or desires to achieve when taking CBD and therefore its important to understand dosage for the best user experience.

While there is a ton of information out there about the benefits of CBD, there isn't much about proper serving sizes and what's even more confusing is that there are many delivery formats and many product options and this can change how much one should take.

SERVINGS 101

Our Approach: CBD is very "person specific" a serving that works for one person, may not work for another.  Your goal is to tailor your intake to provide highest level or relief for lowest amount of CBD.  We recommend to start low and increase slowly, and to  include it in your daily wellness regimen to maximize your experience and start feeling the results you seek. There will be a trial and adjustment period until you find your sweet spot.

Factors to consider:

  1. The concentration of CBD.
  2. Individual body chemistry and bodyweight.
  3. How long it takes to be effective

CBD Concentration/Potency:

CBD potency is measured in MG (milligrams). To track your CBD experience, it is important to keep track of the amount of MG you take.  It may seem confusing at first, but its simple math.  Our tinctures specify the amount of CBD in the whole bottle, and the amount of CBD in MG per serving. ( Ex: incann 1000mg tincture contains 33mg in each dropper, if you are taking half a dropper, keep track that you are taking 17mg. )

Body Weight

People with a larger body mass are going to need more CBD to experience the effects than those who are smaller. A good way to start is to take between 1-6mg per 10 pounds of body weight.  For instance, if you weigh 150 pounds, a low serving could be between 15-30mg, a medium serving could be 31-74mg, and a high serving would be around 75-90mg. Got it?

Again, these are just general guidelines, and some people will need significantly more or less.

Start Low and Increase Slowly

Just because your friend who weighs 150 pounds takes 50mg of CBD three times per day, doesn't mean that dosage will have the same effects on your 150-pound body.

Why?

Because we are all made differently. We also all have our own unique experiences with substances, supplements, and everything else we put into our bodies. Because of this, our body chemistries are all different. What works for your friends or family member, may not work the same for you. So, determine your starting serving based on your weight, gauge how you react, and then gradually increase daily while paying attention to how you feel!

How Long Until I Feel the Effects?

How long you need to wait to feel the CBD depends on the method of administration.

(Just starting out? It may take some time for your body to adapt and respond...take daily and slowly increase until you start seeing results.)

Tinctures:  Tinctures are are held under the tongue and have a pretty fast onset 10-20 minutes. They bypass the digestive system and enter your bloodstream directly beneath your tongue through the mucous membranes.  Tinctures are generally known to have a higher bioavailability than products you swallow, since it doesn't lose potency to digestion, so dosage is usually smaller than a capsule/edible.

Capsules/Edibles:  CBD products in capsules and edibles form usually have longer-lasting effects but do take longer to kick in. That's because they have to go through your digestive system before they enter your bloodstream and interact with your endocannabinoid system. This can take anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes. Remember that ingested products will lose a significant amount of CBD in the digestive system, so you may need a higher concentration.

Topical:  Salves and balms, are best used for targeted areas. When applied topically, the CBD won't reach the bloodstream. Instead, it interacts with local cannabinoid receptors in the area of the skin it is applied to. The effects of topical products can last for several hours.

Final Thoughts on Dosing CBD

While we can't tell you exactly how much CBD to take, we can provide you with some rough guidelines to help. Just remember always to start small, take it daily, and slowly increase as needed or desired.   Always listen to your body, and consider keeping a CBD journal to track how specific dosages make you feel. With a little trial period, and proper tracking you may find the perfect amount of CBD to reap the benefits you're looking for!
